I guess it would depend a lot on how they engaged with us, but I mean it in terms of how technologically superior "cultures" have, even without intending to, completely changed the way inferior ones work, because they present new institutions so powerful that traditional institutions can't compete. (see: Capitalism 😛)

If they took a totally hands-off approach, then no, maybe it wouldn't happen, so "passively" might be an exaggeration.
