Gangnam Style vs The Macerana...

Started by Digi2 pages

Gangham Style felt more organic because it was just this crazy Asian rapper who happened to be discovered on youtube. The Macerena was force fed a bit more clearly, because it was during a time where social media wasn't ubiquitous, so we were at the mercy of record labels a lot more.

Obviously both are formulaic and pretty cheesy. But Psy wins imo.

Psy's has some social commentary in it in the original Korean, too (no-one who's Gangnam style [Gangnam being a high-class area] would actually *call* themselves Gangnam style!).

Plus, like, a gajillion parodies, many of which are great. You want MIT students doing it? Transformers? Soldiers? Deadpool? Lo Pan from Big Trouble in Little China *with the original Lo Pan actor*? They're all out there.

John Carpenter also presented this at Screamfest

IMO Gangnam Style, as many times as it's been viewed on Youtube, isn't a tenth of what the Macarena was back in the day.

The vast majority of the adult population today I would bet has never heard of Gangnam style, whereas I think you'd be hard pressed to find any age group today (or then) that isn't at least somewhat familiar with the Macarena

That may be somewhat true given the fact that people have more control over their viewing/listening experiences now then they did back then. But the social media factor has to be touched on as well. FB, tweeter etc. You'll definitely here about it there.

Wolverine did Gangnam Style, it wins.
