He's by far the most interesting character in James Robinson's Starman. ^_^
And in Underworld Unleashed, he basically taunted the big bad Neron, telling him to peddle his trinkets elsewhere.
Regarding the source of Shade's powers, the only statement I recall was made during Genesis: "Many whose powers are kissed by God have seen their powers die… That's true... Of course there are those whose powers God wants nothing to do with."
That statement was made after nearly every super-powered being in existence lost their powers, thanks to the God Wave/Source shutting down. Shade's powers, however, were entirely unaffected. So based on that, his power source have nothing to do with God.
