That can work as long as the story flows. The problem with Spider-Man 3 wasn't having 3 villains Imho, it was how random and unrelated they all were, with no proper backstory for the main villain-Venom. Plus the John Travolta dance and Spider-Man crying over MJ dumping him would have ruined any movie.
Plus this is hardly the cramming DOFP is doing. But just my opinion. We will see when the movie is released how it turns out. I think (am hoping) this will be awesome.

Yeah, the difference between the villains in Spider-man 3 and the villains in Amazing Spider-man 2, is that the ones in Spider-man 3 were all main and random. Their stories had nothing to with one another. With Sandman and Venom it was basically "You hate Spider-man, I hate Spider-man. Let's team-up!"
The villains in Amazing Spider-man 2 will all be connected somehow. And it's been confirmed that the main conflict is Electro. Rhino is supposedly only gonna be in two scenes and it's likely Green Goblin is not showing up until around the end of the film. Webb also said to expect the unexpected. So it's likely this isn't gonna be the only film Green Goblin appears in.
We also have to remember, for those of us that have been following Webb's updates, that they are trying to build a bigger universe by inhabiting it with the actual characters of Spider-man. Not all villains/characters will feature as prominently as the others and some are being introduced and established so they can appear again later without having to start from scratch with their involvements.
We also have to consider that the Sinister Six are apart of the plan and characters need to be fed into the story with proper balance and smoothness so as to avoid the complications of Spider-man 3.

Not expecting too much, just there for the action and little humor from spidey. My nephew is a huge fan, even ordered him a spidey shirt from here so he can wear to the showing. Should be a fun movie!
