I think it was just another case of Snyder deciding he knew what looked better/cooler than the multitude of artists at DC.
In the Superman: Doomsday film? It was fine I thought bar the Hulk Hogan hair. And that movie still set the bar for Superman fights outside of comics for a while, imo. Apocalypse was all right design wise.
