Meteor Streaks Across Russian Urals, Leaves Nearly 1000 Injured

MOSCOW — With a blinding flash and a booming shock wave, a meteor blazed across the sky over Russia's Ural Mountains region Friday and exploded with the force of an atomic bomb, injuring more than 1,000 people as it blasted out windows and spread panic in a city of 1 million.

While NASA estimated the meteor was only about the size of a bus and weighed about 7,000 tons, the fireball it produced was dramatic. Video shot by startled residents of the city of Chelyabinsk showed its streaming contrails arcing toward the horizon just after sunrise, looking like something from a world-ending science-fiction movie.

It came hours before a 150-foot asteroid passed within about 17,000 miles (28,000 kilometers) of Earth. The European Space Agency said its experts had determined there was no connection between the asteroid and the Russian meteor – just cosmic coincidence.

The meteor over Russia entered the Earth's atmosphere about 9:20 a.m. local time (10:20 p.m. EST Thursday) at a hypersonic speed of at least 33,000 mph (54,000 kph) and shattered into pieces about 30-50 kilometers (18-32 miles) high, the Russian Academy of Sciences said. NASA estimated its speed at about 40,000 mph and the energy released in the hundreds of kilotons. -end snip

Video's worth the watch, if you don't care about reading

Edit: Mods if you could fix "broken" in the title, I'd appreciate it, so I don't look like a dunce.

Don't worry, you look like a dunce either way.

Pretend you deliberately spelled it "borken". It sounds Russian, or something.

Borken sounds funny as hell when you say it out loud.

Anyhoo, glad nobody died. That meteor almost looked like it had intense special effects going on so you can imagine everyone's reaction when they saw that.

'Borked' is the word we're looking for.

apparently some Russian Politician thinks the US is to blame.

^ Saw that coming. We used our superweapon. No not the earthquake machine, the other one.

Also, someone make an Armageddon reference already.

Hahahaha! Borken...I kind of like it.

I find it humerous that no one is really posting about the injured besides Nemesis and instead are focusing on the miss spelled word...

... Though that is pretty funny.

You are focusing on the focus of others rather than the injuries. Where is your compassion?

A bus sized metoerite generates an atomic burst, that's more interesting than injuries.

Why focus on something terrible that happens every day, that doesn't make you compassionate, it makes you a sadistic mongerer of violently revealing media. 😛

Don't take it personal, he's crazy, a laughing stock among other politicians even. The guy can't show in public without getting into a fight. Probably blames the US when he can't find his other sock.

EDIT: lol just listened to that guy on youtube. Translated quote: "It's a good thing there was no sea nearby otherwise those americans would've hit us with a tsunami!" 😂

now that is crazy talk!

Yes, I'm American.

Suffice it to say I caused that meteorite. 😈 Ya know, cause we Americans are obviously Gods capable of causing stellar debris to impact earth.

American Superheroes are actually real Americans, unlike those Japanese Anime posers, they're fake.

Sounds quite interesting.
