Great reads that no one knows about..?

i support that idea fully. i also won't do a damn thing to help, aside from cheer you on. 👆

Lol. Anyway, end of page. Bumping this for relevance:

What if we turned this into a list? As-in, we have title, author, and a brief description for everything, then list them in alphabetical order (or by company?) on the first page. I feel like the description is the most important part, even if we just pull a Wiki synopsis or something. I'd probably just remake the thread...this is a great thread, but it's a bit of a mess.

Good idea.

Agreed.

Great idea. This thread became more popular than I imagined it would, so I never thought there would be a need to have people post their recommendations in a strict format. Obviously there is, lol.

It would certainly help the random joe who visits this thread easily figure out what he/she might want to read... Instead of trying to sort through a dozen+ pages of random mentionings. 😛

If you need any help compiling shit, let me know. Definitely on board with that. 👆

Sounds like a good plan.

Just finished Locke and Key written by Joe Hill (Stephen King's son). An enjoyable series certainly worth looking into if you want something in a Lovecraftian style.

Locke & Key is great. 👆

I particularly enjoyed Locke & Key: Omega.

Thread Announcement

If anyone's interested in helping, I'm going to give it maybe two weeks, then tackle some of it myself. Instructions:

1. Post them in this thread. If you PM them to me, there will be overlap in what people are doing.

2. Feel free to suggest tweaks, but let's try to standardize our formatting. Here's how I'd like it formatted:

Title:
Publisher:
Author:
Year(s):
Length: Just say "6 issues" or whatever. If it hasn't ended, put "Ongoing." If it's multiple arcs and you're not sure, feel free to add a ~ and estimate it.
Synopsis: (keep this to a paragraph, maybe 5-6 sentence tops)
(Optional) Why It's Great: alternatively, you could call this "You will like this if..." and list various genres, authors, or story elements that may entice the reader.

...

On about the 25th/26th, I'll round up everything that's been posted, put together whatever hasn't been covered, and will make the new thread.

Is there anything else we should include in each entry?

Yeah, I think a final "why I enjoyed it" section is appropriate. More times than not, the Wiki synopsis/overview doesn't do a comic justice, imo. /shrug

Anyway, I will tackle every title that I personally mentioned in this thread. 👆

Good deal. And I edited my earlier post to include your suggestion, but made it optional. Once we hit a new page, I'll bump the announcement.

awww, but dad, do we really need all that BS info?? title and short synopsis should be plenty....

You left some vegetables on your plate there, leo. Better finish them if you want desert.

uhuh

😮

Has anyone read Grant Morrison's "Klaus"?

Premise:

Morrison has teamed with artist Dan Mora -- a BOOM! veteran known for his work on "Hexed" -- for "Klaus," a six-issue miniseries slated to debut in November. "Klaus" is a Santa Claus origin story, reinventing Father Christmas as a crusader against injustice and a rough-and-tumble, Conan the Barbarian-esque superhero. The series draws upon early Viking and Siberian Santa Claus mythology, but also aims to be contemporary, portraying a much cooler and fiercer Santa than the one usually known to come to town every December 25.

Morrison: I had this notion way back. I was doing the "All-Star Superman" stuff, and I got so into Superman, so into his character, so involved with what we were doing. When I finished, it occurred to me that I'd really love to do this -- with a character that wasn't owned by a corporation. [Laughs] I thought about, "Who does everyone know?" "Who's every kid's favorite hero?" I suddenly thought, "How come no one's told the 'Year One' of Santa Claus?" It seems so obvious. Basically, this is my "All-Star Santa Claus." [Laughs] "Santa Claus Year Zero." It's kind of neat approaching that character as if he was the world's greatest superhero, and we've never learned the origin.

I wanted to do this, because my take on it was just to do it like a superhero. I think no one's done that, and it was weird that no one's thought about that character -- what was he like when he was young? How did he get the sack? How did he get the reindeer? How did he get the sleigh? It seemed like such an obvious story. I really got into it, especially after the very dark stuff that I've been doing, like "Annihilator" and "Nameless." I really wanted to do just a big, fantasy epic for a wider audience, an all-ages audience.

Full interview with Morrison

*This mini was originally intended to be 6 issues, but it has expanded to 7.

Anyway, the 6th issue was just released today, and I have absolutely LOVED it... Wish it was an ongoing, tbh. The artwork and overall storytelling/dialogue have just been superb. Suffice to say: I highly recommend.

...And no, "Klaus" is not another one of Morrison's 'meta-works'. It is just a good ol' fashioned story. Much fun, and very original. 👆

That actually sounds intriguing.

Yeah, so...

I'm likely legit MIA again in a couple weeks. Get on yer horses, people.

uhuh

I bought the board game based on the Kill Shakespeare comics. It's shockingly complex. I've had to watch videos and download cheat sheets and such to get the rules straight. Seems like it'll be epic as hell. I've talked a few friends into being interested, so I should get to try it soon.

I mean it definitely gets weird at later points, but not bad, just very different (and fairly ambitious for the time it was written) and it's still one of the best things he's ever done.

For me it's better than Watchmen, up there with VfV and From Hell.

I'm just finishing it up. Something about it doesn't quite grip me the way his other work has in the past, but it's undeniably well-written, and with concepts and stories that remain original even today. Certain issues or arcs have interested me more than others, but none have been duds.
