The game is not being literal. He doesn't transform into a more durable fighter. His skills increase considerably so but nothing else save a slight strength increase.

Well so far I'm not impressed, what with the Faerie Elder failing to BFR twice, once against a vampire and once against a human. The fact that she apparently needs to tailor her blasts to a specific type of creature, and take several seconds to charge anyway, does not bode well for any other Faeries.
