New Finnish Copyright Law Proposed by the People

And it looks like the Finnish are waaaaay ahead of the curve. I expected this type of law to happen 10 years from now.

And inimalist (Oliver North) was right about the progression of how copyrights will be handled in the "future". 😐

Basically, the people proposed a law to their government which greatly relaxes their copyright laws: read the article to learn more. That article suggests that this law is at least partially due to the raid against a 9-year old girl for torrenting (and her Winnie the Pooh laptop taken) copyrighted material.

Unfortunately the law seems to be written in code hmm

Seriously, though, anyone have a translation?

Post it here if you find a good one 'cause I wanna know, too. 🙁

Interesting. Hardly surprising that a crowd-sourced bill would focus on consumer end issues with the current regime, though I hardly find anything they are talking about to be objectionable. I'm really interested in the "ban" of unfair clauses in music contracts, as there is a potential double edge sword to the Finnish music scene if record companies have their hands tied compared to international competition.

It seems like a step in the right direction, if for no other reason than more sensible allocation of police resources, though at this point still a band aide. I still don't feel the onus for copyright distribution should fall onto the end user in the way it does, but rather, should work more like cable where companies or individuals provide material to be distributed by IP providers and incorporated into standard fees for use (obviously everything has issues, this just seems the fairest in my mind).

Their parliament still has to vote on it, and international pressure (RIAAmerica) will probably come into play, but otherwise, go Finland.
