It really annoys me that the British media have hijacked the term 'internet troll' to make it mean someone who bullies, harasses and threatens people. That's not trolling. Deliberately misunderstanding someone's point is trolling. Having an obviously wrong opinion and giving obviously wrong answers just to infuriate people is trolling. Insulting and spreading malicious lies about people is not trolling. It's just being a ****ing arsehole.

What do you mean? How aren't these evil trolls proper trolls?
Zooey is not the British media, I don't get what you mean.

even lighthearted pranks and japes among friends is often called trolling. it is at its simplest definition "one who causes/is causing mischief" the media has been trying to label anonymous internet hostiles for years and failing. my favorite was the 'internet hate machine'.
Hahahahah, never gets old!

Thing is, people do exist who can do all sorts of shit on computers... All sorts of shit that blurs the line between 'online fun' and the real world. We also have the issue of kids who take 'forum anti trolls' and 'forum trolls' seriously.

The Independent IS British media. I presume you're not British but it's a big thing over here right now due to a member of parliament and a feminist activist receiving hundreds of rape and death threats on Twitter for campaigning to get a woman printed onto the back of banknotes. The people sending these threats are getting called internet trolls. There was a documentary a while back as well outing people who post sick insults on memorial Facebook pages. They were also labelled as trolls. Neither of those things are trolling. They're just examples of people being callous, horrid *****.
Trolling is using a hashtag on Twitter to say something like Justin Bieber or One Direction are shit just to get a rise out of their fans. The guy dressed as Deadpool and holding up a 'God hates wolverine' sign at a WestBoro Baptist Church demonstration is trolling.
Bullying someone into committing suicide is not trolling. It's bullying. It's being a scummy heartless prick of the highest order. It's not trolling. They are entirely different. The term has been hijacked by the media to mean something far worse than what trolling actually is.
Art of Trolling gives some good examples of harmless, fun trolling.

there is a huge difference between "lol y u mad bro", and "lol your sister is dead" but both are superficial when compared to using mined data/images/video/etc to destroy someone's privacy and dignity irl.
