yeah, he said that the "great hunger" was upon him when he started to lose, he got hungry towards the end of the fight.

To say he was losing is stretching it abit imo. Galactus reacted to the request by the Silver Surfer, and while beginning to devour Mephistos realm he basically ignored him.

I also think it's quite clear, given the scan that Bran posted that Galactus at that point of time of the fight with Mephisto was hungry, given that Nova who was supposed to find a planet for him to devour didn't succeed in doing so before her capture by Mephisto.

Yeah, he was 'beginning' to lose, he was beginning to get overpowered, because he had drained himself due to fighting with Mephisto, as Mephisto began to get the upperhand, Surfer suggested he eat ares, Mephisto gave up Nova because she was not worth losing his realm for.
The real turning point was when Mephisto engulfed Galactus chest deep in lava. Thus gaining the upper hand(however short a time that was) before Galactus began to devour Ares.

The fight was a complete stalemate until Galactus started to eat his planet, because Surfer suggested it because he feared they'd destroy the universe. And Mephisto didn't submerge his chest in lava, that's what Galactus does when he eats planets... like, every single time he eats a planet without machines that's what he does. lol

He was hungry, he didn't eat, he fought Mephisto. He didn't go on a feeding frenzy in that issue, time just passed enough that he was feeding at regular intervals. He was weakened when he fought Mephisto. Deal with it.

"The Great Hunger" is upon him again. Halfway through the fight, clearly implying, he has drained himself and thus began to get overpowered. He then began eating ares, because if it had gone on any longer he would have lost and destroyed the universe. And surfer told him to.

Because he was hungry before the fight and he only did that because Surfer asked him to stop, which is the next panel too:

Also, even if you were right and he drained himself during the fight, where exactly is Galactus getting overpowered? You can make up theories about how the fight would have ended, but at no point in time was Galactus getting overpowered.

Also, Galactus said the great hunger was upon him after the fight and that's why he must feed. Like it was before the fight...
Clearly implying he drained himself and began to get overpowered... lol. He was drained before the fight.

Galactus had time to slowly turn away from Mephisto and ignore him and start absorbing the planet. Clearly he was getting overwhelmed.
