He can summon it back from nearly anywhere, even other dimensions. I don't really see this as a long-term problem.Speed has always been the trick with Thor. No one knows exactly what to do with him when it comes to speed arguments.
Also, I've seen several times he was hit so hard that he dropped the hammer. As long as he's incoherent he's not calling the hammer back. But normally, he would get a chance to call it back.
