The esoteric interpretation of what happened in Eden is the rise of the ego, the illusory sense of self "separating" from the womb/matrix of nature. It may be compared to human development: when the newborn finally differentiates itself from its environment. It goes from being an unconscious set of instincts to a self-directing "body ego."
I suspect much of the difference between the conventional Jewish and Christian interpretation of the events in Eden have more to do with politics and consolidation of organized, institutional power, than anything else.

The Christians used their book and then told them that they were not of god and going to hell, which the Jews don't believe in, btw.
Yes. Looking back one wonders just how poor the communication was back then.
