Connor was most likely the greatest fighter and most competent in battle. In terms of skill he was a warrior more than an assassin, his lifestyle gave him this. He was already showing talent as a hunter by the age of 4. At age 13 he was already dispatching of enemies like Ezio would later be doing as a young adult. That intro of him running solo into the Redcoats lines, literally bulldozing though highlights this strength of his.
Next would be Altair. He was being trained to fight and be an assassin since he was 10, given his mentor it seemed really tough. Taking on two dozen of Richard's elite soldiers at once, or 9 Master Assassins (Al Mualim and his 8 clones) beings great examples. While Connor is the most brutal, Altair was the most direct and swift.
Ezio was only participating in the occasional street fight in his youth, likely taking some formal training with a sword from his father. Gaining his proper combat training after beginning the life by his mercenary uncle, Mario. After his skill is applauded by all mercenaries. The intro to Revelations shows this.
Edward too did not receive training, but in his case at all. His skills came from youth brawls, like Ezio, and the brutal life of a pirate. As per Blackbeard's "fights like a devil, dressed like a man" speech, Thatch recognises Edward as the deadliest thing on the sea, and one of the cleverest. Noting how he can dispatch the crew on a Spanish Galleon with ease.
Lastly Adéwalé's, like Edward's, skills come from the pirate lifestyle. As nothing has been stated or shown, we can accept that he is below Edward.
So Connor > Altair > Ezio > Edward > Adéwalé.
As a bonus I would place Desmond between Ezio and Edward. While he did gain the skills and battle history of the tree top assassins, effectively making him a rival or superior to Connor, the issue I see is with his own body and mindset. Gaining their skill but lacking their physically fine-tuned bodies (not as strong or fast, not being able to take a hit as well as someone with physical experience) and mindset (He doesn't have the cold precision of Altair or the brutality and instincts of Connor. He has his own, which differs from the three. Not necessarily better or worse, just not giving any advantages) means he's great in theory, not as much on the field. Still, its not like he's an average person. He did get Assassin training until he was 16, so likely capable of holding his own in a low professional way. With being the least 'battle capable' with all that skill and experience added to blackbelt body, it should be enough to pass Edward.
I'd agree that Connor may be the best out of those, but given how Haytham is supposedly a superior fighter due to experience and training, I'd wager 53 year old Ezio and Prime Altair were better combatants than Connor was during ACIII. Altair is implied to have gone through the events of AC without getting hit at all, and 53 year old Ezio is a completely different animal from 20 year old Ezio.
Connor's likely the best free-runner though. Desmond's free-running skills take a huge jump once he gains his skills.
Connor gained the advantage by cheapshotting Haytham in the gonads.
Real skill right there.
Haytham has stated at least twice that he was a superior fighter. Connor has never disagreed. Might be that Haytham's being arrogant and snobbish, but given the way they fight in-game, Haytham has had actual training in fencing. Connor's more feral.
Haytham's advantage came from being trained by both Assassin's from a young age, and Templars. I think that combined mentality and skill set gave him an edge over Connor. Also despite what he said he felt and what he acted like, I have a feeling Connor still cared for his dad at least somewhat, while Haytham had no similar love for Connor so he could unleash more in a fight.
What? Being that close to the cannons destruction is more detrimental than a nut punch. To be honest that could have easily been a gut punch to get similar results, as all Connor needed was Haytham to feel that jolt of pain.
Haytham is that arrogant. Not that I recall the times besides telling Connor he has much to learn.

Except getting punched in the gonads hurts a lot more than getting punched in the gut, and I never said Haytham was at a greater disadvantage than Connor during the fight.
Connor never used 'skill' to overpower Haytham and stab his arm, which is what you were implying. He used a cheap-shot.
Haytham said that he could have killed Connor if he wanted to. Connor agreed. I highly doubt 3 years would be enough time for Connor to become more skilled in combat than someone who could have easily killed him.

Haytham was the one who saved Connor at his execution.

conor got owned and beat to bloody pulp before thrown to jail. and altair at the begining of the story got raped physically by that templar. judging by the scenes they both are not very good fighters. edward always gets his nose broken by someone. ezio is just a punk. the conclusion is there isnt any assassin that can fight properly.
