Battle takes place on Revan's Flagship, there is only a pilot on board and he is too scared for his life to try to get involved. No outside help, and no, this is not during any sort of battle (I.E Bastila "kills" Revan) this is beforehand.

You don't think Malak would've become stronger within the time Revan didn't know who he was?

I don't "think", it was stated he grows more powerful each quest.
However the quote is still in the loading screens after Leviathan.

Malak takes it. I don't think it was merely hubris when Malak states that he's surpassed Revan in power.
