There have been several writers and all of them differ on their opinions on everything from power levels to personalities to character growth.
I don't think it is possible to make an X-Men movie that will please a great majority of the fans since every fan has a certain X-Men writer they enjoyed more than the others.

I have heard of but haven't seen the movie Sin city yet, but the point that you make about who to follow makes me point out that you have to give it up to the creator of anything. If it wasn't for them, there would be no one to remake. Tweaks are fine, but keep the original close to heart IMO.
