Nuke size matters, and being in that good shape from a 1.2 megaton to the face, after having previously gotten stabbed? Impressive. Also, '14 godzilla eats radiation, which may help.
And speaking of monsters and damage on each, both did a good job. Godzilla's not as regen-y/invincible as normal, and looks pretty beat down in the end, like an old soldier. The Kaiju are bio-weapons, and while they'd sometimes be knocked silly, you didn't want to give them time to recover because they'd keep coming even with major injuries, you went til they were dead.
Both movies, btw, are done by Legendary, who are building themselves up to be the American Kaiju Kings ^^
