I'm not even that interested in Gladiator vs Thanos - based on the bulk of continuity Thanos would be the favourite IMO - I just object to the mental gymnastics some people are putting themselves through in trying to explain away this particular scene. It is what it is.
Back away from the dialogue slowly for a moment... If THanos said nothing about Glads at all and just BFR'd him.. what would you say? Thanos promptly and SWIFTLY won via forums rules... He eliminated him from the fight with ease and then went on to crush the others. This is the point... Thanos' actions speak louder than anything else. He's so versatile he can take out people with mere gestures. Can Glads to that to him? NO.. What is so hard to get about this is beyond me. Thanos' tried Glads like a minor inconvenience and with a gesture removed him from the equation. You're right actions DO speak louder than words.
Next, imagine you're watching a worldstarr video and this big bounder is taking on 5 pretty decent size guys.. If they attack him and the bouncer pushes one into a hole and then takes on the others.. would you go.. wow he's afraid of that one guy.. look he just removed him form the fight... OR would you say... that was a smart move and typically how you'd deal with multiple people. Think about it for a second please.

Starlin gave Gladiator some much needed respect. Maybe future writers will treat him better now too.Thanos still wins, of course, but Glads got some love. Fans of both characters should be happy.

Again, the battle of Sungod vs Hulk and the whole issue is seen as a nod to the crossovers of the nineties. But in that case the story was structured around a nod, then we can give it value and sense. My reasoning is simple, instead of interpreting characterization or plot elements I reduce it to the following core values: It is a nod? Yes. Does it advance or serve the plot? No. It's just a nod then.
Perfectly said. And this is the mentality that should be applied to that scenario, mostly as a show of respect. I actually really like Gladiator and am pleased that he was given respect. I feel that Gladiator is long overdue for a great run. He has also been currently overshadowed by the newer Superman esque characters. But ofcoarse this token of respect is being ruined by people overreacting saying how Thanos was afraid of Gladiator...

I'm pretty sure after the actions from Thanos, and Thanos words etc...Gladiator confidence went over the roof. I bet Gladiator felt like he could take Galactus in a fight after what Thanos did.

Lol! Funny you say that I posted something in the Gladiator vs Annihilators thread before I read this message. Looks like I was accurate to where this was going. 😛

Please stop quoting him so that I can't see his craziness. The ignore function needs an update.
Close you eyes and wish it away all you want. Same writer, too. If you simply stop saying stupid shit like Thanos was scared of Gladiator, none of this would be happening.
I am a Gladiator fan as well and I do believe he was given a nod. Instead of you being happy with that, you are insistent upon taking the showing to another level and you are willing to lie to do so. That's why you attract abuse.

I didn't read what he said though.
I'm not saying that Thanos was afraid of Gladiator, because there isn't really any solid proof of this, but why in the world was he in such a hurry to get out of there? He told Warlock that Gladiator was going to be back in just over 3 minutes, and then asked if Warlock was going to join him as he walked through his portal. Was it fear? Why didn't Thanos engage him, but instead chose to BFR him? What was Starlin trying to say here? I'd love to read his comments on this. In the end, I really got the impression that Thanos was written at a lower level than he has been in the past.
