Persians versus Rome

The Persian army (300 part 1 and 2) decide to invade and conquer Rome.

Maximus is in charge of the Roman army and all Gladiators from "Gladiator."

Maximus and co. know of the invasion a full day in advance. Both sides are familiar with the others capabilities.

Who wins? Anything goes.

IIRC, Maximus was in charge of a single Legion, so that's 5,000ish men and his gaggle of gladiators. Xerxes' film army was said to be over one million. The Romans do have 600ish years of technological advancement over the Persians, but not sure that's going to be enough to overcome the 200-to-1 advantage the Persians have.

Probably comes down to terrain (like in 300) and if the Romans can make it so they're only attacking/defending from the front.

Do we know how big the entirety of the Roman army was at that time? Because if he was in charge of the entire Roman forces like Xerxes was for the Persians. Things could go different.

At it's peak in 211, Rome's military power consisted of around 450,000 men. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperial_Roman_army

Gladiator takes place around 30 years before that, as Marcus Marcus Aurelius died (actually of sickness) in 180 AD.

Well, if the odds are closer to 3 to 1, as opposed to 200 to 1, and given the couple of centuries in tech difference, if Maximus can find favourable terrain and do a competent job of commanding the Romans, I definitely see them as being able to beat back the Persians.

if the Greeks can beat the Persians then the Romans can easily

Romans crush the Persians

The entire Roman army would steamroll the Persians.

Based on?

On what I just posted.

@Neme, based on history

Persian fodder could fire arrows further than any archer in history has ever fired an arrow. Literally miles.

It's Rome versus an army of Wolverines (With no healing factors though) and greater numbers.

Persia wins. 👆

Real life Romans versus the fiction demon creatures from 300?

I'm going with the monsters. Specially when they're 1,000,000 strong.

These look like they almost rival the LoTR oliphants in size

So it's agreed then. Persia wins. 👆

Yes but the Romans could do the same thing they did in Gladiator or the same thing 300 did in 300 and just put their shields up.

Alexander conquered the Persians and Rome eventually conquered the Greeks. Romans win.
