They didn't fight a pure sabers duel, and even if they did, Malak > TFU Vader in sabers.

I wouldn't go so far as to say Malak is above TFU Vader in sabers, but if Kazdan and Kota can trouble him even moderately, Malak can probably win

Eh, all of Vader's "vast improvements" afterwards prevent me from holding him in high esteem in TFU.

Doubt it. Even before his improvements during the OT, he was more or less evenly matched with Maul as a duelist.

Hmm, but you don't consider Malak to be? That statement was about TFU Vader being bellow Malak in sabers, not OT Vader being unskilled with sabers in general.
