Sidious escaped by dropping a chandelier on Maul, not by overpowering Maul's grip. The scene is simply not commensurate with Filoni's consistently articulated vision of how Sidious compares to the likes of Maul and Opress. It's a deleted scene and incongruous with the director's vision; it's non-canon. Sidious pwns.

Considering that at that point he just wasted effort on lightning, he could have well being temporarily weakened.
Equally discomfort of being pressed against the wall can interfere with his concentration making him unable to respond with powerful enough counter, thus he threw a lamp instead.

Any tears that might otherwise be shed are dried by the warm glow of Filoni saying "no one can compete" with Sidious. Including Maul.
