Your Most Underrated/Overrated Sci-Fi Movies of All Time

For me...

Underrated:

1. Serenity - quite possibly the greatest sci-fi movie ever made

2. Gattaca - When sci-fi was more than just big explosions

3. Dredd (2012) - Saw it in theaters 3 times, absolutely amazing. I'm not sure why it wasn't successful.

4. The Omega Man - F uckin great. Will Smith's remake was good too, but I've always preferred this one.

5. Phase IV - It was a flop, but I love it.

Overrated:

1. Blade Runner - I never understood the appeal. Story sucks, acting mediocre, dialogue bland. Visually it looked good, but that's about it.

2. Matrix 2 and 3 - As much as I loved the first one, its sequels were mediocre.

Ditto on your list

Most people hate the Matrix sequels. I'm not sure how they could be overrated.

Loved the sequels and thought it was a great and thought provoking trilogy

Edge of Tomorrow and Pacific Rim. Probably the best escapist sci film films to come out this decade, but vastly under rated and unseen by the vast public

Overrated would definitely be Prometheus. Many thought it was great and IMO it is one of the worst sci film films ever. Avatar was meh and Time called it the most fantastic sci film film in the history of cinema. Bull phucking shit.

Edge of Tomorrow for sure for underrated,

Prometheus was bomb shit overrated.

I don't understand the sudden hate for Avatar. Hating Avatar seems like the popular thing to do nowadays. I loved it.

I actually enjoyed Prometheus. Was a visually gorgeous movie. Script could've been a little better. 😬

Visually and theoretically great, scripting and screen play, dodgy, I watched it a bunch, guess there was nothing else out at the time that got my eye for sci fi at the present.

I didn't hate it, but unlike Terminator, which was a completely original concept, Avatar was just the same Pocahontas movie we have seen a million times. Calling it the best sci film film in the history of cinema is very undeserving considering the many far more thought provoking sci fi films made.

That's fair. Don't call Avatar a bad movie though. Beautifully directed and acted. The story is kinda simple, but its execution was brilliant. Certainly not greatest of all time, but still pretty damn good.

Just like Avatar, visuals in Prometheus mean shit to me if the story sucks, and while it introduced some themes, they did jack to elaborate, not to mention the characters stupidity made slasher teen victims look like Niel Degrasse Tyson, and their blind hunches were an insult to the scientific community they were trying to impress with their themes.

It had a pretty hot scene where a pretty hot woman gave birth to a squid monster though.

Overrated: Serenity. Yep, I went there. Thought the movie was absolute garbage and I have never understood the appeal.

Underrated: Empire Strikes Back. Technically a fantasy movie but some people (incorrectly) consider it sic-fi so IDK. Anyway there're some people that not only don't count it among the greatest films of all time but actively dislike it... So yeah, criminally underrated.

Personally, Reign Of Fire never lived up to the hype.
I still remember the movie posters depicting numerous helicopters battling dragons...that never happened.

And Pandorum just got too convoluted in plot towards the end.

Firefly is one of the most overrated television series ever made though.

Nah, I've seen the show in entirety about 6 times. It has hidden gems in its story and dialogue that make it brilliant. And, as a show, it never got a chance to complete its story. So the show has lots of loose ends, Serenity couldn't tie up all of them.

People thought Star Trek was overrated before it became mainstream too
