This is what I meant.

Domestic revenue just counts for a lot more than overseas revenue, says David Mumpower with Box Office Prophets:
The reason for this is simple. Collecting revenues abroad is a trickier proposition since the dollar fluctuates against foreign currencies. There are also tariffs from these governments in place in order to keep as much money as possible from leaving their countries and going abroad, which is an understandable practice. While the global conglomerates such as Fox, Disney and Time-Warner that run major Hollywood studios can secure sweetheart deals with various local governments, it doesn't happen for each film. As such, international box office revenue is much less reliable than in North America.

Smith has had a slew of movies that have done well, too. Robert Downey Jr. isn't a big draw outside of Iron Man. Same with Johnny Depp and the Pirates movies. On average. It all depends on the movie itself. Seeing as the movie has Joker, I don't see it failing.
I guess we will see how much good will BvS will draw, Joker was just done and his popularity might hurt if if Leto departs from the Leger version.

Depp was only a draw when Pirates hit. Nothing before. All of his movies hardly made him a star. This is a long life Depp fan, so I was hoping for something to make him truly big.
Smith has made some bad decisions, but nothing close to a Depp.

Joker was done 7 years ago now. Will be 8 years by the time we see Leto's version.
People will expect a new take on Joker whilst I'm sure WB is smart enough to not completely throw out everything that made Ledger's version so popular. Regardless between Hamill's, Nicholson's and Ledger's versions, the character himself is just a very popular villain.
My guess is Suicide Squad will also feature a Batman cameo. Might even be more than a cameo if it's anything like the Batman: Assault on Arkham animated movie.
The only backlash leto will get is if he sucks. The man is such a talented actor that I doubt that will happen. People want more Joker it seems and 8 years is a long time. Leto plans on him making the best Joker yet.
Jared has big shoes to fill as the new Joker in the upcoming flick, ‘Suicide Squad!’ However, the actor is ‘confident’ that his version of the famous villain will be ‘the best’ yet, andHollywoodLife.com_can EXCLUSIVELY tell you why he thinks so.
Jared Leto is taking his hot new role as the Joker in Suicide Squad very seriously! Knowing it might be his “most difficult” role ever, he of course has a plan to really make this a character “fans will love”. He already cut his long locks for the role, and_HollywoodLife.com_has learned EXCLUSIVELY how else he’s gearing up to make his Joker a winning role!
“Jared wants to make sure his Joker is not only something the fans will love, but he doesn’t want to step on the toes of Jack Nicholson or Heath Ledger,” an insider tellsHollywoodLife.com.
“He wants to make the character completely his own,” our source continues. “He knows that this role may be his most difficult ever, but he is confident that he will make his version of the Joker the best. This Joker will be more cerebral and comedic than what we have seen before, nobody should expect a copycat version. It’s going to be awesome!”

Focus had a decent drop and is past 50 M production budget. So, WW it's at 71 M. Not bad.
Taking into account marketing costs and the cut theatres take from the tickets (much more so internationally) it still needs to make another 30-40 million (preferably half of that domestic) to make its money back. So it's not in the clear yet.
Clearly Suicide Squad can't depend on Star Power alone to make the big bucks. But I agree with you the Joker and Luthor will help it, especially if Batman V Superman is well received.
