The skin under your armpits is very thin compared to the rest of your body. The thick hair follicle serves as part of the immune system, preventing direct exposure to virus or bacteria or indirect exposure via mosquitoes, thicks, etc.
You also have more nerve endings in your armpits making it easier for you to detect an insect crawling in your armpit hair to easily brush it off before it can get to your skin.

Hair traps sweat, then it starts to stink when bacteria start breaking it down. That smell attracts mates.
