Never forget...
National Elephant Day
Date When Celebrated : September 22
Elephant Appreciation Day is today. Show us how much you care about elephants. This is a big, elephant sized day. We feel it should be celebrated in a big way.
Little kids and big kids are fascinated by elephants. In a zoo, in the circus, or a wildlife special on television, elephants captivate us by their sheer size. Today is your chance to let them see that you appreciate them. Showing your appreciation for them starts with a visit to your local zoo. They will be happy to see you. Making a donation towards their support, is a great way to show your appreciation.
Here's a neat suggestion. .....Show elephants at your local zoo how much you love them, by serving them a special treat. They like pumpkins! They like big pumpkins. See elephants munching on big pumpkins.
Origin of Elephant Appreciation Day:
Mission Media Inc .created in 1996, largely because elephants are ....large. (and a whole lot of other great things.) The founder, Wayne Hepburn, received a paperweight of elephants on parade from his daughter as a gift. He became fascinated by them. He amassed a huge collections of elephant books and paraphernalia. His fascination and love of elephants, led to the creation of this day so you and I can stop and enjoy this huge, lumbering beast.
Tomorrow is...!
Ask a Stupid Question Day
Date When Celebrated : September 28, sometimes celebrated on the last school day of September.
Today is Ask a Stupid Question Day. It's your opportunity to speak up, and to ask all those questions you were afraid to ask. All those questions that you thought were too stupid or dumb to ask, have been piling up all year long. Today is the day to unload them. C'mon give it a try. Nobody will laugh......we hope.
This may be a stupid question, but I will ask it anyway...... Teachers say there is no such thing as a stupid question. Or, that no question is too stupid to ask. If this is true, then why do your classmates laugh when you ask a question? Yes, kids can be cruel. But, if you have a question, there's no better place to ask, than in the classroom.
Today's Quote: "Stupid is as stupid does". Forrest Gump
Movie of the Day: "Dumb and Dumber"
Other "Stupid" stuff:
Ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer.
This might sound stupid, but......
Do you think I'm stupid enough to fall for that (duh!)
Seen on a T-shirt "I'm with Stupid". Well, if that's true, how smart are you?
Origin of Ask a Stupid Question Day:
The roots of this special day goes back to the 1980's. At the time, there was a movement by teachers to try to get kids to ask more questions in the classroom. Kids sometimes hold back, fearing their question is stupid, and asking it will result in ridicule.Teachers created this day on September 28, If it fell on a weekend, they would celebrate it on the last day of the month.
Today is...
World Vegetarian Day
Date When Celebrated : Always October 1 st
World Vegetarian Day encourages us all to eat our vegetables and fruits. Countless studies have proven that a diet filled with fruits and vegetables is good for our health. Vegetarians, have taken this path either for their health, or from a conviction that they should not eat, and therefore, kill animals.
A vegetarian, by definition, eats no meat. That includes fish and other forms of seafood. Bottom line is, a vegetarian eats no animal. Their diet consists of plants....fruits and vegetables. They are ethically and morally opposed to killing animals for food. They are also against poor treatment of animals at farms ad slaughterhouses.
There are plenty of groups and organizations that support the vegetarian effort. If you are considering becoming a vegetarian, a quick web search, or a look up in your local phone directory should produce a group near you. While you are online, check out the wide range of sites offering vegetarian recipes.
This day is used to promote awareness of the issues, and encourages others to become vegetarians. Seeing as fruits and vegetables are very healthy for you, World Vegetarian Day is a good day to try a vegetarian diet. You might just be surprised at how good it tastes, too.
...not my preferred diet, though i've done it several times, while deployed, because the meat cooked in the chow halls was usually disgustingly greasy.
As an example, the meatloaf seemed like it was deep fried...😘
We're all a little mad, here...
Mad Hatter Day
Date When Celebrated : Always October 6 th
Mad Hatter Day is a great day to be silly and celebrate silliness.
The Mad Hatter is a fictional cartoon character depicted in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The Mad Hatter is always acting silly. So, on Mad Hatter Day, it is only fair and fitting to act a little silly yourself.
Despite being a silly day, the selection of the date was actually quite logical. The Mad Hatter wears a top hat. On the front of the hat is a slip of paper with "10/6" written on it. The paper is believed to be an order to make the hat, and that it costs ten shillings sixpence.
Grab yourself a top hat, and have a a very silly Mad Hatter's Day!
Did You Know? In the 8th Century, mercury was used in hat making in a process called "carroting". Mercury poisoning drove some hatters crazy (mad).
Origin of Mad Hatter Day:
Mad Hatter Day was the brainstorm of a group of computer people in Boulder, Co. It dates back to 1986. Most likely a bit bored with bits and bytes, they got a little silly and created this quite special day.
All hail the mighty Asatru!
Leif Erikson Day
When : Always October 9th
Leif Erikson Day gives recognition to the first European to set foot on North American soil. There is no dispute of this event in an of the history books. Historians have been able to put this together based upon records at the time. However, Leif Erikson made no maps of his journey. And, physical evidence of his travels are lacking.
How's that Spelled!?: In some writings, his first name is spelled Leif, Leifur or Leiv. His last name is sometimes spelled as Erikson, Ericson, Ericsson, or Ericksson.
Around 1002 A.D., Leif Erikson sailed to North America from his home in Greenland. He went in search of a land seen(but not visited) by a Norse Sea Captain. During the voyage, he landed in a number of places. The landings were never documented in a map. It is believed he landed along the coast of New Foundland, and perhaps as far south as near Cape Cod. Erikson and his men spent the winter in North America. They built a large house for lodging , and a shed to shelter the boat over the long winter.
Leif Erikson never returned to further explore North America. A number of explorers, including his brother, travelled to North America. His brother was killed by Indians.
In 1964, a joint resolution of Congress declared October 9th as Leif Erikson Day.
Hmmm...not sure if i believe this:
International Skeptics Day
Date When Celebrated : January 13th, or October 13th or first Friday the 13th of the year
International Skeptics Day is the perfect day for you...the "doubting Thomas".
Perhaps the earth isn't really round!? Maybe, the sky isn't truely blue!? Does he(she) really love me!? ........These are the words and questions of the classical skeptic.
By definition, a skeptic is a person who questions or doubts facts and theories. He, or she, is a mis-believer. A skeptic does not accept the "Given". If you are inclined to doubt things that you see or hear, then International Skeptics Day is for you.
If you practice a little, I'm sure we can make a good skeptic out of you. Go ahead, give it a try. And, what better day to practice skepticism, than International Skeptics Day?
Origin of International Skeptics Day:
We suspect that a real skeptic created this day. And, they did so by first creating doubt about the date to celebrate this special day. We found three dates: January 13th, October 13th, and the first Friday of the year. While Friday the 13th sounds intriguing, we have our doubts..........
We encourage you to celebrate skeptics and skeptical behavior on all three dates!
There is some reference to this as an "International" day. True, there are skeptics organizations all over the world. However, we found no documentation of this day being celebrated anywhere outside of the U.S.
Haha, GizmoDuck...!
Babbling Day
Date When Celebrated : Always October 21th
Blatherskites, mark this day on your calendar. For today is Babbling Day. This isn't a day to remain silent. Tell everyone you know about this special day.
What's all the chatter about over this special day? Well, on Babbling Day, we celebrate those of us with a glib tongue. You know them when you hear them. They're talking gibberish. They never stop talking. They babble on and on. They can turn a simple one sentence statement into an endless dissertation.
Spend this day babbling like a baby, if you must. As for me, I will spend it by a babbling brook.
BTW: In case you didn't know, a "Blatherskite " is a person who babbles.
