I never said he beat him. I said he was fighting him, and just before that fight he was kicking people 50 feet and crunching metal. Even during the fight Snake got knocked back a good distance. It shows how tough/strong he is to actually fight a guy like Grey Fox in hand to hand.

well... I can say right Now... Solid Snake has many battlefield experience and he was in Fox Hound, which gave him pretty much experience, he was in the gulf war too and with the green berets.
MGS he infiltrated in a base which was fulled of Genome soldiers, not regular soldiers, but genetically modified to be better and smarter soldiers, he defeated 5 members of Fox-Hound!, these are not just some mercenaries morons, those are some of the best soldiers in the world, one had psychic powers... he could read Snake´s mind, but someway Snake didn´t let him read his mind and he could kill him, Sniper Wolf was one of the best snipers in the entire world, she was trained to be a sniper and she could aim at a target for weeks without moving or eating, and Snake could defeat her at sniping, in the area she was the best. He own his grounds against Gray Fox in hand to hand combat.
and just to put out here. Solidus Snake lost to Raiden. a Man whom Raiden can´t remember anything about his childhood and his experience on the battlefield, in that time.
Now do not get me wrong. I am not trying make Raiden look weaker. But it just solid snake has more battlefield experience than Raiden.

In Metal Gear Solid 2 Vamp was able to effortlessly disarm Snake, pin him against a wall and cut him open before he spared him. If Vamp can easily do that to Snake than Gray Fox could of killed him if he wanted to.

In fact judging by this post, you really know nothing about Metal Gear Solid.
In Metal Gear Solid 1 Snake infiltrated a base full of Genome soldiers, these soldiers had automated senses but they also had little to no experience and 3 of them were mowed down by Meryl (who was a rookie who had never killed before) quite easily
On top of that, over the course of Metal Gear Solid, Snake was caught a totle of 5 times throughout the game. Meryl (again a rookie) had sneaked up on Snake TWICE, he had been caught twice by the Genomes, in one instance was beaten by 3 Genomes and captured. And towards the end of the game in REX's hanger he was caught on camera by Liquid and Ocelot like a total goof.
As far as Foxhound goes, Psycho Mantis read his mind just fine, the only reason Snake beat him was by breaking the fourth wall (gameplay mechanic plugging the controller into port 2) He didn't beat Mantis because Mantis couldn't read his mind. Stop making things up.
Sniper Wolf is also a joke, she claims to be the world's greatest sniper? Yet she lost to Solid Snake twice in a row, so by default he would be the world's greatest sniper, and considering how he couldn't even tag Solidus with gun fire that doesn't speak volumes on the level of marksmanship in MGS.
Finally with Gray Fox, as stated above, Gray Fox suit was malfunctioning, and Gray Fox wanted to die. Considering how bad Vamp was able to own Snake in MGS2, if Fox had wanted to kill Snake he could of done so with ease.

liquid Snake: Solid Snake defeated Liquid Snake on top of REX. a Man whom took down two F16 with a Hind chopper.
