Usually when I have to research picks Leo make, it sends me into books that are awesome that I maybe didn't know about or haven't read. I've had some good times. But Runaways is awful. It's like they distilled all the angsty BS of the X-Men books, and made a whole comic about it. You're getting my best effort here bud, because they deserve no extra attention.

runaways? what the hell is runaways....? 😕

😂
Look, in (it seems) every book ever there's a bunch of reluctant heroes - often kids, teens, children, etc. - who are all caught up in their emotional BS that they do nothing remotely worthwhile. The scenarios stumble upon them and they, full of plucky rebellion and impossibly good-hearted cliches, triumph despite themselves. I don't put myself in their situation and say "well, here's what I'd do," but I also appreciate characters who are written with some self awareness and a sense of perspective.
So then, the lone kid who has both of those things, the one who sees Cloak & Dagger appear and says "hey, let's just talk! This is a classic fight before a team-up," the kid who actually has a plan for the group and can think past the next five minutes...that kid is the bad guy. So what's the takeaway? "Don't be like him, kids! Cool-headed logic and foresight are for villains. Just follow your ****ing heart like the mess of hormones you are, and the imbalanced mess of stunted emotions you're likely to grow into, and everything will turn out for the best!"
And don't get me started on how they're all written as vaguely jailbait-ish while constantly dwelling on sexuality. I don't want to see the target demographic for the book. I have a feeling I'd squirm right out of my comic fandom. Tack on an unknown, uninteresting parental cabal with some Saturday morning cartoons as their overlords, and I had given up long before the book was done.
I get it; it's Joseph Campbell's hero's journey that about 90% of film and literature derives from, and teens are natural metaphors for that journey because of the changes taking place. But it doesn't mean I have to like it every time it's fed to us.

k, posts are in. just waiting on digi. i went ahead and used the post apocalyptic new york BF unless you really want something else. outer space maybe....? 😖hifty:
i assume the standard 1 week is fine? final post in by next monday at midnight your own time?
i also passed along rules and updates to the judges and requested all votes be in no later than 5 days after the conclusion, before then if possible. hopefully everyone can manage. by the time we're done and votes are in, scoob and smurph should be ready to go. i've no doubt smurph was a bit frustrated by the delay, but it could be for the best. 2 simultaneous matches are tougher to read for the judges and onlookers. one at a time makes it easier for everyone NOT competing to enjoy....
