Officers and Snipers

Working on some fiction involving soldiers, and I need some help from folks with military experience (or knowledge).

Do commanding officers hide their rank when in combat situations, soas to avoid getting targeted by snipers, or is this something Hollywood made up?

It seems like, what with every soldier having to wear insignia on their uniform detailing their name and rank, trying to hide it from snipers would be pointless, but maybe I'm wrong.

How difficult would it be to pick out an officer from a squad of grunts?

Aim for the white guy.

They're all white.

This is a story about a utopia; there are no brown folk.

From what I understand, they don't tend to hide rank, but in combat uniforms it's very difficult to tell the difference between them from great distance.

This more more used in WW2 and Vietnam. They would not wear rank. Now they do but instead of wearing silver and gold bars or oak leaves, its black cloth or metal so it does not stand out and looks like everyone else.

As far as the second question, it would be silly to give that info up cause it could endanger service members.

Riv thinks he's some big dog and since he's a mod on some some other message board, he comes here and acts like a tool.

Its summed up nicely by Bran, and others here.

they wear a subdued rank, it's hard to see unless almost face to face, Tbf all ranks are subdued.

FOB's have non salute area's, or sometimes the the whole base

Not hard, if someone knows the difference between attention and parade rest they could find officers and high level NCO's.

Bran is a punk though... And honestly, I don't see what is wrong with wanting to keep a thread on topic. I don't like it when someone starts derailing one of my threads either. Or anybody else's thread for that matter.

Thanks, Star. 👆
