I've had discussions about this subject in my classes with my students. There are two sides to the argument: one side holds that cell phones make people self-absorbed, cheapen true knowledge by allowing people to look up anything (and often the information they get is of dubious quality), and ruin traditional social interactions. The other side holds that phones actually teach multitasking, being able to text counts as bidialectalism, and by making communication easier modern phones shrink the world and give us access to a constant stream of information from around the globe.
Edit: this is a misleading thread title.

Yea its pretty much a double edged sword.

Yea that phone looks cool. Texting has gotten out of control, companies charge more for texting and data then they do calls now. They have taken the talking out of a phone and charged a premium for it. Thanks for telling me about that, I might buy one.
I honestly don't know about that. I have many friends and family whom I would not be able to communicate with if not for our current technology. Hell, I wouldn't even know you guys if not for tech. And while I am not a particularly social person, I do know many people who still physically hang out together, even if they can also communicate via text or internet. I've never seen someone rather text someone than hang out if the opportunity is possible. If tech replacing human interaction was really the case, I don't even know how humanity would reproduce as you need some level of social charisma to attract someone. Even the people on dating sites have to go on a real date at some point.
Also agree with OV, the thread title is massively misleading, especially since the OP admitted it wasn't Einstein's quote.

Quit crying about it, I didn't know it was not an authentic quote till after I was told. And how exactly were you mislead in such diear straights, have your beliefs been shaken? The conversation evolved into a good subject.

The problem I have is the people of Einsteins generation were idiots and they did it all without cell phones or computers. Einstein himself was obviously a genius, but he was far from the norm.
People 100 year ago were not stupid. They did not have the technology that we have, but that doesn't mean they were idiots.
Every generation whines about how the luxeries enjoyed by the next generation will make them soft.
At a point in humanity, some philosophical caveman tool probably whined while carrying 90 pounds of bricks on his back about how those young people and their fancy "wheels" were dooming humanity to laziness and impotence.
Our grandchildren will be scolding their kids for spending too much time on the virtual reality machine, telling them that they should be talking to real people over the internet like normal folks.

I never said they were stupid because they didn't have technology. They are stupid in different ways just like people of today can be idiots in different ways. Cell phones and such didn't create this, they just gave people *new* ways to be idiots.
The implication just seemed to be people back then were somehow "better", which just isn't true at all and that has nothing to do with technology or anything like that.

That's bleak, hope we get to scold people for virtual reality in our lifetime.
Plus I disagree, I think the current generation growing up with internet, etc. will be able to adapt, so it won't be old people scolding heir grandkids for spending too much time in virtual reality because they should be on the internet. They will be scolding the kids because THEY want their damn turn at the virtual reality.
