Study links low intelligence with right-wing beliefs

Old news but still relevant.

Researchers have found a possible explanation for why certain people are prejudiced: they’re less intelligent.

Children with lower general intelligence are more likely to become prejudiced as adults, according to a Brock University study.

The study, published in the journal Psychological Science, examined data from two large-scale British studies, and found lower intelligence scores in childhood were predictors of greater racism in adulthood, which the researchers controversially explain is brought about by adopting right-wing ideologies.

A secondary analysis of data from a U.S. study also showed those with poor abstract-reasoning skills were more likely to have anti-homosexual prejudice, partially linked to authoritarian attitudes.

Lead researcher Gordon Hodson told LiveScience that the results of the study indicate a vicious cycle, in which people with low intelligence are drawn to socially conservative ideologies. In turn, those ideologies can contribute to prejudices.

“Socially conservative ideologies tend to offer structure and order,” he said, explaining why those with lower intelligence may gravitate toward the right. “Unfortunately, many of these features can contribute to prejudice.”

The researchers found that people with lower intelligence also tended to have less contact with other races and groups, which, Dr. Hodson said, supports previous research that determined interacting with other groups is mentally challenging and cognitively draining.

Dr. Hodson explained the findings do not mean all liberals are smart and all conservatives are stupid, LiveScience.com reports. “There are multiple examples of very bright conservatives and not-so-bright liberals, and many examples of very principled conservatives and very intolerant liberals,” he said.

Previous research has suggested that the brains of conservatives and liberals are wired differently.

I think it comes down to conservative mindsets being less likely to challenge traditional values and "common sense." Liberals as a rule are supposed to seek social change and progression, and that leads to questioning more assumptions and often more critical thinking.

But as this study points out, there are lots of exceptions both ways. Dadudemon is a filthy "center right" winger or whatever, but he's probably smarter than me in a lot of areas.

I'll also point out that I've known many a liberal in South Florida who has no more grounds for their beliefs than the conservatives I've known in North Florida--in both cases it often comes from what their parents and communities believe, not any beliefs they've formed themselves. I'm proud of the fact that coming from a Republican family in a super Republican area I ended up being rather extremely liberal without coming to resent the conservatives around me. I credit that to a very steady, very gradual change brought about by a long series of questions I asked myself about what I believed.

I guess we all could find random links to validate our lives 😂

Yeah, I've seen this before, it was on Huffington post and linked elsewhere.

Definitely interesting and on an anecdotal level, I tend to agree. The majority of intolerant and bigoted people I've met in my long years, were or were more closely associated with right-wing beliefs.

You're using much older and smaller non peer reviewed studies.

I mean it's obvious that right wingers are dumber than normal people, but are they dumber BECAUSE they are right wingers or the are they right wingers because they are dumb? We don't know...

Very true, it is a chicken and egg situation.

Haha, no, I don't like having to believe right wingers have any redeeming features and are capable of appreciating art Bardock.

And yet it is left wing people that won't let people make cakes anymore.....How odd.

I feel the same way with left wingers and intelligence.

the left has ultra-progressives loonies, i'll grant you. and they can be dangerous, idiotic, and destructive in their own way, like causing outbreaks of disease because they had a big circlejerk and decided that they know more about vaccines than doctors.

with that said, the right has far more gullible simpletons due to the fact that neoconservative and libertarian candidates tend to deliberately and aggressively pander to easily excitable low i.q. voters.

Yeah the left NEVER panders to Stupid People....Now excuse me while I go take the money from all the passed out pot heads in the park.

I'm not certain that intelligence is the main ingredient in all cases. I've found that areas with less diversity are breeding grounds for the ignorant, and less open minded folk around the world. I had a British teacher tell me and the rest of my class, that the first time she saw a Black person, that she ran and hid (she was a child when this happened). This wasn't exactly the dumbest person that you'd typically run into. Just something to think about I guess.

Segregation, mass media (music videos, movies etc) can no doubt lead many people to develop a skewed perspective, or outright fear of something or someone that may appear to be physically different than they are. When I went on a canoe trip far north of Quebec city, we ran into a tribe of Indians that flocked to me as if they were my long lost cousins, but appeared to shun and remain standoffish when they saw my Caucasian friends. Just an example of how similar features can go a long way in changing a persons opinion about another.

I agree with the OP to a certain extent, and it makes me wonder how far the human race in general has actually come? Race, color, sexual preference, and many other trivial things should not be a stumbling block for so many, but it is.

Indeed.

Then the OP has the nerve to say your links don't count. Only his do. LMFAO.

Liberals are so pathetic.
