I just think it's less conscious than what we would normally call a 'reaction' for comic feats, and I also think there might be some artistic license involved.

And that's fine. I just look at it from the pov that given that Superman can and has perceived things moving above the speed of light, him seeing/processing this isn't entirely out of the question.
Carver's hate aside, the scan isn't exactly set in stone, no.
