Are you serious? Of course they heard her - she didn't even whisper it. And she was right in front of them. And yes, they heard Valkorion - they only don't when he freezes time, which he didn't in this instance. I have no clue how you concluded they didn't defend themselves - we don't see one way or another, but the context makes it obvious they were forewarned.
