Are you sure? I mean, we have gay marriage now, and racism has all but disappeared, hasn't it?
Obviously things have gotten better from the 50s onwards, but I do think with both homophobia and racism, if not as overt anymore as it used to be, the people within these minority groups do, by default face more opposition than those that fit within the majority groups. Obviously it is often even subconscious on the part of people, but studies about hiring decisions for example show that those with "black sounding" names get charged more harshly. Racism within the justice system and police forces also still exists. I also think parents who disapprove or disown their children for their sexuality still exist.
I mean it's not as obvious and easy to discern as when the laws actually discriminated, but these kinds of things are relatively slow to change and people's attitudes are still negative for many minority groups which makes it harder for them to succeed.
