Hanako was born in Thailand in 1947. She was a gift by the Thai government in 1949 to Japan. She is famous in Japan as being the oldest elephant alive. She has spent 66 years of her life living in a small concrete enclosure, alone and isolated from the rest of the animals at Inokashira Zoo.

Wow I've never seen an elephant that looked so dead inside. You can see it in her eyes, she is ready to die, poor girl.

"Isolated from the other animals in the zoo? Yeah. Lets fix that. Put Lions and Tigers in with the rest of the petting zoo animals. FEEL THE LOVE!

Dislike seeing animals in cages/zoos, especially dislike seeing intelligent social animals like monkeys, apes and elephants. See it akin to being in a prison.

I prefer sanctuaries over zoos

I think it's sad how the zoo couldn't even provide her some decent space and greenery. I mean instead of keeping her in the coldness of concrete, they should've substituted it for soil and a few plants. They could've added another separate enclosure for another animal for her to look at, or a few toys like a ball or something. All she has is a piece of tubing. On top of that, her diet comprised of only fruit and sugar water. I'm actually surprised she survived this long.

I don't have a problem with some zoo's. Some I have seen the animals have REALLY awesome habitats. It's not just some cage.

But this elephant, seriously..euthanize it. It makes me think of the movie Water for Elephants. She just looks sad, like she wants it to end but is cursed with a lifespan a lot longer then most animals.

The tear marks really got me the first time I saw the close-up pic of her.

Well elephant tears are a big seller on the black market.
