This Is No Longer A City.
It's a unfortunate consequence of the US and UK backing and establishing Saudi Arabia as a main power in the region to fight communism, with whom we basically now have to keep up good relations with because they have a huge amount of the oil we use.
It's hypocritical but there's not a huge amount that can really be done whilst the West relies on the oil produced.
A long term shift from oil/petroleum to other forms of energy (renewable, nuclear) would probably slowly shift the balance of power, but that's obviously really long term.
It also doesn't help that if Saudi Arabia's regime changed it could either become even more radical (although they do promote Wahhabism the current leader is a relative modernizer) or more moderate. But could also completely change the balance of power in the region, which would potentially even more disruptive and lead to worse things.
But essentially, oil and relative stability is why everyone continues to support the Saudi government.
