Chicken and egg situation. I'm sure a lot of ISIS members joined in order to act out on psychopathic compulsions they would have regardless of religious fundamentalism. Just as many likely are so deeply ingrained in the extreme religious fervour that it's indistinguishable from mental illness that compel people to kill.
The numbers on those deaths are vastly outnumbered by the death's caused by radical muslims.
Here are some numbers.

The number of casualties does not make the actions of the pro life activists any less vile, only less in scale.
Those who choose to murder in the name of their religious faith are basically condemning themselves anyway. No malevolent diety, wether it be Islam's Allah or the Christian's God, would condone the intentional murder of the innocent.
To me, the radicals seem to be of the absolute belief that if you do not follow their religion to the absolute nth degree, then you are nothing but a heathen and heretic to be destroyed. There is no middle ground, there is no differing opinion, you either conform or you die, violently. In that belief, they take away the gods right to judge a human's life when their natural death comes... it's really weird.

So either they are mentally ill or like a Syrian refugee told me, Islam turns good people bad. Because this is what is happening.
Clearly the thousands of people cannot suddenly come down with mental illness?

It's no much as turning good people bad as allowing people who were always bad to act on their impulses without fear of the force of law.
I think more people than we'd like to think would be like that if you were to remove the institutions that enforce social order.
This just gives those people with those tendencies the means to act on them.
