LAL - what? From a authorial standpoint, it was intended to be a shocking, climatic scene, when Broly survived being tossed in lava during the second movie, via a Ki shield.... Gohan surely believed it was enough to do him in, I honestly don't see him tanking the kind of thermal energy a sun releases, if a little lava was perceived as a viable threat.
