You don't have to 'buy it'. It was all right there on panel. And just in case some people still didn't understand what was going on, it was spelled out in the Handbook Entry for the LT :

My friend, Protege was about to erase the LT, Eternity and Hawkgod, if not for Scathan.

And there is on panel proof he surpassed the LT.

Protege didn't have the power of LT in all his appearances. He can just copy what he can see.

Anti Monitor punches him in the eye and kills him. At best he would get the power of Anti Monitor and it's a stalemate.
