Luc Besson found guilty for plagiarizing Carpenter's Escape from New York

He has been ordered to pay Carpenter and his co-writer Nick Castle more than half a million dollars, as the script was found to have "massively borrowed" an incriminating amount of similarities,

Only a half a mill? Does that mean the movie bombed major?

Shame the plagiarism didn't make the movie any good.

Seems a bit stupid. If this were to applied across the board then Tarantino would be sued to death. I guess if you're paying homage to films that inspired you then you have to make it explicitly obvious otherwise you're ripping it off.

Besson's Brick Mansions also ripped off Escape from New York a bit too.

Haven't heard much of cases like this since the late 1970's, when George Lucas and 20th century Fox sued Universal, over Battlestar Galactica being a ripoff of Star Wars.

John Carpenter should sue Neil Marshall next, over Doomsday being a ripoff of EFNY as well.

Then maybe he should sue himself, because Escape From L.A. wasn't a sequel to EFNY but really a remake with a bigger budget. False advertising! 😛

Someone should do something about all these found footage movies.
