Even though race is a social construct, it is one in which society-at-large is heavily invested. So even though race is not "real" in a biological sense, racial classifications are still "real" to the vast majority of people, and have real-world implications.
That is like saying that since gods are not real, religions no longer exist.

She is really not that controversial. She does not claim to be of African heritage. She claims to be black, which is a cultural identity.
At one time in this country, Irish and Italians were not considered white. In fact, Irish slaves were sometimes considered black. Only when they moved from the out-group to the in-group, did they suddenly become white.
That says everything about the arbitrary nature of racial classification. Whether one is in one group or another depends entirely on who is doing the defining.
She is effectively saying that because there is no biological basis for blackness, she culturally identifies as black.
The only people triggered by that think by "black" she means "of African descent," and those are not necessarily the same thing.
Others take exception to someone giving up their privilege to voluntarily become a member of an oppressed minority.
That is the same argument people make against men transitioning to women, and it reveals more about their attitudes than those doing the transitioning.
