I believe that the Death Star's design was loosely based on the Malachor temple, and that runs on kyber crystals in canon. I'm not sure that it's directly stated that the temple uses kyber crystals, though.

That seems more saying he would rival the ancient sith in power, not the actual power. Though I guess it could be both.

Isn't there a quote about the technique being almost as old as the Sith themselves, too?
