I'd compare characters like Dooku or Kenobi, who like you said both had to work hard to achieve their success, to an above-average student who works and studies incredibly hard and as a result makes the top 5% of their class. Then you have the mensa student who is lazy, immature, goofs around, yet manages to contend if not surpass the disciplined student by sheer IQ and natural gift.
