If you look closely, you can see that Maul is the fodder. Hard to tell though, easy mistake to make.

Some circumstances which could explain the short fight scene is how Maul was on the verge of a breakdown and been crossing the dessert for a big amount of time, then again I'm getting tired of having to use these type of excuses to explain these scenes.
