We have surmised, over the years, that the Rebellion isn't technically over until 'Return of the Jedi' and even then there was some additional fighting that lead up to Jakku. So when is the ultimate victory that would mean Hera and company are free of the fight? Well, it doesn't seem to be for a long time. So it's not impossible and there are probably a lot of stories, I'm just gonna try and tell the most important ones for them, what their saga is, and probably not every saga ends on the same day. In Rebels, we're introducing this pretty potent Force-using kid. Where is he? You'd think he'd be a pretty important tool for the Rebellion to use in the later films. But eventually [fellow producer] Simon Kinberg and I figured out what that means, where they go and what happened to them.Don't sound dead to me. 🙁

Well yeah, does anyone actually give a flying **** about Ezra and the ghost crew? I only watched rebels for Maul and he's dead so it's boring.
I like Kanan very much as a character. Hera's alright. Everybody else can slowly have their skin melted off during Imperial torture. Unless Sabine starts dressing more provocatively. Then they can keep her around.

Yoda's "Last of the Jedi" is quite definitive. Having Kanan or Ezra around during RotJ greatly undermines it. And no, this isn't nearly similar to Ahsoka surviving through TCW.
Besides the fact that Filoni has questioned the general interpretation of it already, tons of stuff could happen why we don't see them in the OT.
