LT was first shown dead on the moon in New Avengers #8. At the time we had NO idea what could have been powerful enough to kill him, OR how his carcass got there:

When the heroes first started building the Life Raft in Avengers #42, they needed a material capable of weathering the incursions *enter LT's corpse*:
