Second day the SM is losing again: Dow falls 500 points as Fed Chairman Powell says the economic path ahead is ‘highly uncertain’

U.S. stock benchmarks fell sharply Wednesday as Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell offered an uncertain near-term outlook of the economy, as state and federal officials attempting to restart businesses from a coronavirus-induced lockdown.

“The recovery may take some time to gather momentum and the passage of time can turn liquidity problems into solvency problems,” Powell said. -snip

Damn, it was looking only slightly down this late morning when I checked my stock...

Looked again, went almost a $1 a share down for the day. 🙁

With the continued drop, the story has been renamed: "Dow sheds 2% as Wall Street digests Fed’s grim outlook for economy"

Yeah, it's looking more and more that the people who said "not a recession, we're entering a depression" are likely correct.

Stocks TANKED today with fears over a second wave of COVID-19 cases:

June 11, 2020 Close:

Dow ***** 25,128.17 *** -973.79 *** -6.90%
S&P 500 *** 3,002.10 *** -113.87 *** -5.89%
Nasdaq **** 9,492.73 *** -339.52 *** -5.27%

This comes as the Nasdaq hit a record high on the 8th.

Trumps handling of the pandemic set this nations economic growth back probably a decade. I hope the trump voters are happy this president has made America weak again. Look at New Zealand and effective leadership with a clear plan how it is done.

Because the Fed has saved Investors instead of saving workers.

They kept pumping money into the stock market, and Investors started selling as soon as it reached a decent price.

Whilst unemployment is at ridiculous historic levels.

Well You only have to compare unemployment rates for different countries:

How do you defend that position for a decade? By the by it wasn't trump that stopped ppl from working, it was govenors and such. If you wanna do this at least be honest in your approach.

I'd prefer more honest data, not the dishonest U3 statistic.

That list is comparing apples to 7. Not even an apples to oranges because they are not even closely related.

Better measure would be labor force participation rates controlled for population age. If you want to get fancier, balance that against per capita (person) income against average standard of living.

Any time I see U3 stat used, I know it's dishonest.

Well using that data isn't honest to the conversation anyway since it was govenors that shut down businesses.

Jeebus, stocks did hit the shitter today.

No wonder Trump through a hissy fit blaming the Fed today vuia Twitter. Weird how he's quick to take personal credit when the market is rising, but it all finger-pointing when it's tanking.

Sort of like it's weird how Obama would be credited with it rising and yet not blamed for it tanking.

Good point showcasing hypocrisy on both sides Rob 👆

Not really. But you had to do you.

Maybe you should Tweet to Trump and ask him to stop personally attaching himself to something so volatile as the Stock Market? It's a fool's gamble.

It's just as hypocritical actually. Not up for debate 👆

Trump takes credit for factors that are not due to him but blames others for things that are to do with his leadership and actions. Why do the idiotic trumpers not see it? Deep down they probably do but self denial is a powerful thing.

Lol, gonna allow a sad soul to come agree.

You as an example literally hid behind the market will "tank" and it took a literal pandemic to see significant downturns, I think judging the econmy on the stock market is terrible.

My discussion was on a decade of failed economy because of Trump, another neo liberal garbage talking point without substance.
