Sauron vs Morgoth

Hey guys i am trying to understand better LoTR.

I know Sauron was a servant to Melkor.

But after Morgoths defeat he took his place.

Was wondering of Sauron can surpass his master using the ring of power.

Yes and no. Morgoth weakened overtime. Sauron poured his power into the ring, but Morgoth poured his power into the earth itself (and his “creations” like orcs and werewolves) corrupting it. Of course, once he did this he was no longer able to access his power and so, at the time of his defeat, he was greatly weakened. Tolkien himself has said Sauron at his most powerful was perhaps greater than Morgoth at his weakest. Of course, when Morgoth was at full power, he was way beyond Sauron ever was or could be. At that time he was titanic being, a literal dark god, capable of shaping the world and matching the Valar (the gods) on his own.

Thanks a lot i see.

A question. Morgoth created the dragons right?

Morgoth was a vala, the equivalent of a god in the LOTRverse. Sauron was a maia, the equivalent of an angel in the LOTRverse.

And yes, Morgoth created the dragons.

There was just one god, Iluvatar. For thus who know D&D I would rank them this way.

Iluvatar (or Tom Bombadil) - Overpower

Valar like Morgoth and Ungolianth - Greater Powers

Maiar, like Gandalf, Sauron or the Balrog and beings like Glaurung or Ancalagon - Intermediate or lesser powers

Beings like Ingwe or powered down Istari - Demi Powers

Morgoth is a solid Tier above Sauron with the Ring
