Abeloth essentially tries to assault Vol "physically and in the force" in some in-between place, and Vol hit a weak-point planted by Luke Skywalker to cause Abeloth tremendous pain and anguish. Abeloth redoubles her efforts to attack Vol initially, but Vol resists, and Abeloth opts to escape instead of keeping on trying (and failing) to overwhelm Vol:

She convulsed, writhing in pain in the heart of the Force, reacting to his relentless attack on her wounded area as if he were ripping at an infected cut in the physical world. Her attack on him changed from a desire to harm to a desire to escape. Elation filled Vol. He only hoped he could survive long enough to deal the killing blow.
The sheer anguish Vol caused Abeloth was so intense that she completely shed her form and subconsciously unleashed enough raw energy to melt a city:

Unable to retain her form, unable even to notice that she had not retained her form, she thrashed and howled as tentacles erupted from her torso and her face shifted like melting wax. Her anguish used the Force as a weapon, as she had so often before, but this time she was barely aware that she was releasing nearly inconceivable amounts of Force energy upon a city that was completely unprepared for it.There were several dozen beings within immediate range, some sleeping quietly in their beds. Most were with their families.
They imploded. Farther away, others awoke in agony as their bodies were turned inside out and chunks were ripped from their bones.
So yeah, Vol is absurdly powerful. Hence the following quote:

Then there's other wank for Vol, such as being the undisputed Overlord of some very powerful Sith, like Taalon, Workaan, the other High Lords, Viun Gaalan, etc.
