Best depictions of insanity

Think James Macavoy from Split, Vincent D'Onfrio as Gomer Pyle, or Robert Denieo as Travis Bickle. What are some of the best portrayals of mental illness or insanity in movies you remember?

Hate to be obvious but the Joker from The Dark Knight and Hannibal Lecter are the best

Jack Nicholson was a pretty convincing wackjob in The Shining.

Elwood P. Dowd, gloriously.

Nicolas Cage in anything he's ever been in. 👆

Billy Bob Thornton in Sling Blade

a beautiful mind

Have to agree with Heath Ledger/Joker and Jack Nicholson/Shining. They were done very well imo.

Francis Dolarhyde in Red Dragon.

One flew over the Cuckoos Nest.

Gthat dude in the first Texas Chainsaw massacre. The hobo they picked up in the van that cut himself

Charlie Kelly from It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia.

Donald Trump

Unfortunately I don't think he's acting, though. 🙁

good choices. there's a lot of crazy out there. it involves people using mental gymnastics to justify their actions and motivations. it's not just about the cartoonish raving lunatics. it's people molding together and convincing eachother it's ok to do what they do and invent problems and injustices that they feel force them to take action

it's getting worse.

Kathy Bates in 'Misery'
Anthony Perkins in 'Psycho'
Vincent Dnofrio in 'Full Metal Jacket'
Glenn Close in 'Fatal Attraction'

Bradley Cooper - Silver Lining Playbook.
Vincent D'Onofrio - The Cell / Full Metal Jacket
Christian Bale - American Psycho
Glenn Close - Fatal Attraction
Danny Devito / Brad Dourif - One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

I think Keanu Reeves villain character from Man of Tai Chi provided a completely different kind of nutcase
