I can agree with better background checks, but I disagree with making people get a doctor's note before allowing them to exercise a constitutional right.
Assuming someone doesn't have mental health issues when purchasing a gun is like assuming they don't have a criminal record, it needs to be checked.
Mental health checks should be included in regular medical check-ups.Which are not mandatory, or even freely available to everyone

Then you don't understand what a constitutional right is.
I'm familiar with states where you're not allowed to openly carry, not ones where guns are disallowed altogether though. Regardless any advocacy for getting rid of gun free zone needs to be tempered against the public safety risk this may pose, especially in regards to the legislation that typically makes the headlines, which advocate people carry guns where it would pose a serious hazard to do so.
How is there a public safety risk when no-gun-zones homicide rates rose when they adopted said policy?
Not to mention the inordinate amount of mass-shootings which plague these areas.
Right, I said as a prerequisite, namely, to better background checks. Not what are currently passed off as checks that allow mentally unstable 19 year olds with a history with the police to acquire an assault rifle. A multiple of zero is still zero. All you've provided is a damning report for why current background checks aren't working. However the effectiveness of a rigorous background check is obviously going to be undermined if it isn't applied universally.
In fact, the background check system right now is far too stringent. We have millions of false positives every year inhibiting citizens from acquiring guns. Well, that is not how these studies work Beni. They go to a certain area(ie California) where they observe the effective of Universal Background Checks in that area.

In fact, 98% of crimes are committed with a gun bought illegally while the other 2% are bought at gun shows, usually under background check.

So does this mean the government will finally:1. Give us comprehensive universal healthcare (that includes mental healthcare)
2. Scale back our military industrial complex and funnel that money into:
2.a. Domestic infrastructure
2.b. #1.
3. End the war on drugs and funnel that money into #1, 2.a., and 2.b.
4. Overhaul the tax system to:
4.a. Capture potentially lost tax revenue from corruption and loopholes.
4.b. Simplify the tax code to reduce the cost of doing business in the US.
4.c. Automate taxes.
5. Invest much more heavily into science-based initiatives and programs. If so, yeah, great! Let's protest and show defiance to our Government for not doing things correctly the way our First Amendment intended. Let's hope our protests and petitions result in meaningful progress.
That'd be great.
Notice how my 5-point list doesn't list anything, at all, directly related to guns? Because it's more stupid bullshit red-herrings that do not address why America is more violent than some countries.
What I love is how thoughts and prayers are meaningless, but hey, a 17 minute protest? That's pure 100% bonafide meaning. Chalk full of meaning.

Oh, I didn't even think of that.
Yes, useless protests (whining) are no different than thoughts and prayers. They do nothing but make the actors (pun intended) feel better about themselves.
"Well, now that we had our little tantrums for 17 minutes and absolutely NOTHING will change, we feel much better. Let's go back inside, pat each other on the back, and sip our juice boxes."

And it's just 17 minutes, but in my school if we decided to just walk out...there would be consequences. But there won't be for this. It will be encouraged.
And then they'll go to college. And when their feelings get hurt they'll stomp around, whine, hold the dean more or less hostage(happened at Evergreen college, kids were escorting the motherf*cker to the bathroom) until they get what they want.
